Newcastle v Aston Villa live: score, updates and line-ups

Full time: Newcastle 0-1 Aston Villa. Manzambi's close-range header just before the break proved decisive, and despite a spirited second-half push that saw the hosts edge the overall shot count, Newcastle couldn't force a way past Villa's defence in six minutes of stoppage time, with efforts from González and Jackson at the other end both blocked late on. It was a bad-tempered, stop-start afternoon at St James' Park, with six yellow cards shown to Newcastle players compared to Villa's two, and ultimately Villa's early breakthrough was enough to see out a disciplined if unconvincing win.

Newcastle have kept pushing but still haven't found the breakthrough. Wissa fired across goal and Barnes had a shot blocked as the hosts added to their shot tally, while at the other end Hornícek had to save well from Barkley and Villa also went close through Mbaye. Osula's booking for a foul on Torres means Newcastle have five yellow cards to Villa's two, and with four minutes to go it's still Villa 1-0 up despite Newcastle edging the overall shot count.

Newcastle have taken a real grip on this since the double substitution, pulling possession back level and adding four more shots in the last ten minutes alone. Wissa and Osula both headed narrowly off target before Barnes and Wissa saw efforts blocked in quick succession, and the hosts now lead on shots overall despite Villa still edging it on shots on target. Villa have had a couple of half-chances of their own through Cash and Jackson from a corner, but it's Newcastle pressing for the equaliser as the game opens up.

Newcastle have started the second half with a bit more purpose - Botman forced Suzuki into a save from a corner and the hosts have added a couple more corners to their tally - but the half has quickly descended into another card-fest, with González and Wissa both booked for fouls in the space of two minutes. Villa still have the edge in shots on target and possession, and Toure and Osula have just come on for Fernandez-Pardo and Willock as the changes start to shape the chase for an equaliser.

Villa are ahead against the run of recent play. Manzambi got up highest to head home from close range after João Gomes picked him out with a cross, and Newcastle's resistance - built on those blocked efforts from Wissa and Botman - has finally been breached.

A niggly spell saw Joelinton and Botman both booked within a minute of each other, and the fouls have kept stacking up on both sides. Newcastle have edged their way back into it since though, winning a couple of corners and seeing Wissa head over a blocked effort from Barnes' cross, and they've now nudged ahead on possession and corners despite Villa still having the better shot on target.

Scrappy opening quarter at St James' Park with plenty of free-kicks breaking up the rhythm, but it's been fairly even. Hornícek had to be alert to deny Jackson from close range after a spell of Villa pressure, while at the other end Barnes saw a shot blocked and Willock fired wide from a tight angle. Villa have shaded possession but Newcastle have matched them for shots, so no real foothold for either side yet.
