Newcastle tie down young forward Alfie Seldon on first professional deal
Newcastle United have secured the long-term future of one of their most promising academy talents, with forward Alfie Seldon signing his first professional contract.
The Mag confirms the news directly, reporting it was "great to see rising young Newcastle United star Alfie Seldon agreeing a new deal" and noting that the contract was signed on his 17th birthday (The Mag).
The Shields Gazette adds further detail, describing Seldon as a "'Delighted'" young forward who has put pen to paper on his pro deal, and highlighting his strong form this season with six goals already to his name (Shields Gazette).
Elsewhere, Chronicle Live's coverage is focused on a different subject entirely - sporting director Ross Wilson's verdict on head coach Matthias Jaissle, who has had seven league games in charge and reportedly needs to show "bravery" to navigate a difficult spell (Chronicle Live). This story does not relate to Seldon's new contract and instead points to wider concerns being flagged around the club's current form under Jaissle.
On the Seldon story itself, The Mag and the Shields Gazette are in agreement on the key facts: a young academy forward has committed his future to Newcastle with a first professional contract, seen as a reward for his progress at youth level. The Shields Gazette's mention of his six goals this season underlines why the club have been keen to tie him down, while The Mag's detail about the timing - on his 17th birthday - adds a nice personal touch to the announcement.
Taken together, the two reports paint a positive picture for Newcastle's academy pipeline, with Seldon emerging as a name to watch. Meanwhile, the separate Chronicle Live piece serves as a reminder that, away from the development squad, there are bigger questions being asked about the first team's direction under Jaissle.
